John Brice is an associate attorney with experience in the general areas of electrical engineering, applied communication, and geographic information systems. His work focuses on all aspects of domestic and foreign patent prosecution from due diligence searches through prosecution and post-grant reviews. John excels at helping clients create and implement comprehensive protection strategies tailored to their particular needs.

John’s experience includes work on complex electrical and software technologies including telephony, RFID, access control, semiconductors, optics, Artificial Intelligence, communication networks, communication protocols, encryption, web-based technologies, information storage systems, and feedback and control systems. Before joining the law firm, John worked as a research assistant with the Colorado School of Mines Physics Department, where he conducted research on biophysics and microbiology projects.

John obtained his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Colorado School of Mines. His undergraduate degree, which was earned with honors, is in Engineering Physics with a minor in Computational and Applied Mathematics. John’s senior design project was on Protein Purification and Biopolymer Synthesis.

William Fischer is a registered patent attorney with a diverse technical and legal background spanning electrical engineering, biotechnology, and software. At Sheridan Ross, he focuses on patent preparation and prosecution in technologies related to electrical and computer engineering, including software, semiconductors, AI, control systems, and medical devices.

Bill brings more than a decade of experience advising clients ranging from startups to global corporations. His practice includes portfolio strategy, invention harvesting, patentability and freedom-to-operate analysis, and patent risk assessment. He has also counseled clients on patent licensing and litigation support matters.

Before joining Sheridan Ross, Bill worked at several IP-focused law firms and in-house legal roles, where he gained extensive experience drafting and prosecuting U.S. and international patent applications across a range of disciplines, including software systems, materials science, and biomedical technologies.

Bill earned his law degree from the University of Colorado Law School and holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Colorado Boulder. He is also trained in molecular bioscience and biotechnology, holding both a master’s and a bachelor’s degree in related fields. Bill is admitted to practice in Colorado and Washington, and before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Kelsie’s practice includes counseling clients through patent preparation and prosecution, due diligence, and portfolio analysis projects. She has a specific focus on molecular and cellular biology including biochemistry, microbiology, therapeutic methods, and genetic engineering. She regularly works with individual inventors, publicly funded companies, nonprofit research institutes, and universities at all stages of portfolio development.

Before joining Sheridan Ross, Kelsie served as program manager at the University of Colorado’s Inworks Innovation Initiative where she oversaw operations, facilitated connections between the university and local entrepreneurs, and taught a curriculum focused on biological innovation. Kelsie holds a Bachelor of Science degree in forensic biology from Purdue University, a Master of Science degree in molecular and cellular biology from the University of Colorado-Denver, and a law degree from the University of Denver Sturm College of Law.

Liangyin’s practice focuses on patent prosecution for mechanical processes and devices. Lia helps clients protect and enforce their intellectual property portfolios and implement comprehensive protection strategies. Lia’s practice includes supporting clients through all aspects of the patent prosecution process from working with inventors and in-house experts to understand and draft an initial patent application and conducting patentability searches to helping clients develop global strategies aimed at maximizing protection for their products. In her day-to-day practice, Lia prepares and prosecutes domestic and international patent applications, drafts licensing agreements, and prepares patent validity, patentability, and freedom-to-operate opinions.

While in law school, Lia worked with a commercial litigation firm, the Colorado Office of the Child’s Representative. Lia earned her law degree at the University of Denver Sturm ​College of Law, where she was active with the Asian Pacific American Law Students Association.

Lia holds a Master of Advanced Studies in Criminology and a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of California-Irvine. She is also a native Chinese speaker. Outside the office, Lia enjoys playing piano and Guzheng,  as well as drawing, cars, and bikes.

 

 

Tristan is a registered patent attorney  in the litigation department of Sheridan Ross. His practice focuses on all litigation in patent, trademark, trade secret, and copyright disputes, and general commercial litigation. Tristan’s practice includes supporting clients through all aspects of the litigation process from discovery and trial preparation to post-litigation motions and post-grant proceedings.

Before attending law school, Tristan worked as a legal assistant for a general practice litigation firm, where he gained extensive exposure to a full spectrum of litigation filings including pre-trial motions, depositions, and subpoenas. While in law school, Tristan was an Associate Editor for the San Diego Journal of Climate and Energy Law. He also worked as a Research Assistant for the University of San Diego School of Law where he helped develop the Patent Litigation Dockets Report Dataset for the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Tristan also worked as a Judicial Extern for the Honorable Michael S. Berg of the United States District Court for the Southern District of California.

Tristan earned his Bachelor of Science degree in biological sciences with a concentration in molecular, cellular, and developmental biology from the University of California, Santa Barbara.  He received his law degree with a concentration in intellectual property and technology law from the University of San Diego School of Law where he was awarded the CALI Award for Future Excellence in International Intellectual Property and the Westover-Giali Scholarship.

 

Jack Raycraft is a trademark attorney with Sheridan Ross P.C. His practice focuses on helping companies protect their brands and reputations from idea generation to market implementation. Jack works with clients across a range of industries to develop and deploy comprehensive brand-protection strategies domestically and abroad. His work includes assisting clients through all stages of the trademark prosecution process from brand clearance to enforcement and portfolio management.

Jack also helps clients create protection strategies with domain names and online disputes. His work in this regard includes monitoring and policing client websites, online retailers, and other e-commerce vendors. Jack’s background working in-house helps him better understand how to align his counsel to his clients’ long-term goals, particularly as they relate to licensing and contract issues.

A recent law school graduate, Jack previously worked as an Associate Corporate Counsel in the in-house legal department of a global telecom company where he supported due diligence and contract review in a range of licensing and purchase agreements. He also previously served as judicial extern for Federal Magistrate Judge Scott Varholak. As a student at the University of Colorado Law School, he participated in the Entrepreneurial Law Clinic, partnering with startups and early stage companies on a variety of issues. Jack also served as the Sources Editor for the Colorado Environmental Law Journal.

Jack holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Finance, as well as a law degree from the University of Colorado Law School.

 

 

David’s practice focuses on all aspects of patent practice, from drafting and prosecuting utility and design patent applications to helping clients research and analyze their innovations and products within the marketplace with an eye toward long-term, global protection strategies. With a background in civil engineering, David works on technologies related to mechanical, electro-mechanical, and process engineering innovations.

In his patent prosecution work, David prepares and prosecutes domestic and international patent applications, prepares patent validity and invalidity, patent infringement and non-infringement, and freedom-to-operate opinions. He also regularly assists clients with due diligence projects, and related IP agreements. David has experience working on a wide range of technologies, including mechanical, medical devices, software, oil and gas technologies, industrial technologies, construction products and consumer products. He also has experience with intellectual property litigation, including conducting discovery, drafting motions, complaints, and other briefings in federal court matters.

Before pursuing a legal career, David worked as a project engineer for a nationwide general contractor where he managed and supervised construction operations in high-rise residential developments.  David holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from The University of Arizona, a Master of Science in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Stanford University, and and a law degree from Florida International University College of Law. David is fluent in Spanish and conversational in Italian.

Raphael Samost is a registered patent attorney and associate specializing in patent prosecution within the firm’s mechanical engineering practice group. Leveraging his degree in Materials Science and Engineering from Drexel University and his law degree from Rutgers Law School, Raphael provides tailored counsel to clients across a variety of technical disciplines. His practice focuses on drafting and prosecuting patents, conducting prior art searches, and managing complex IP portfolios. Raphael’s multifaceted experience, technical proficiency, and commitment to excellence make him an invaluable partner for clients seeking innovative solutions to protect and advance their intellectual property.

Raphael is admitted to the Colorado, New Jersey, and United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) bars. Before practicing law, he honed his technical expertise in engineering roles, including research on biomimetic materials and improving mechanical systems for industrial applications. He also brings industry insight from managing operations and contracts for over 100 cell towers nationwide, as well as experience from working abroad in Singapore.

Raphael is actively engaged in the IP community, serving as Co-Vice Chair of the New Lawyers Committee and holding leadership positions in AIPLA initiatives that support mentoring and law student development. Beyond his legal practice, he is dedicated to philanthropy, having helped raise over $75,000 to support addiction recovery efforts for The Matthew Tarnopol Foundation, created to honor his late stepbrother.

 

Seth Shockley is a trademark attorney at Sheridan Ross, where he supports clients in protecting, managing, and enforcing their brands across domestic and international markets. His experience includes preparing and prosecuting trademark applications, conducting clearance searches, and drafting Office Action responses before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Before joining Sheridan Ross, Seth gained valuable experience at Denver and New York-based law firms, where he contributed to trademark prosecution and litigation support, as well as initiatives integrating AI tools into legal workflows. He also worked as a corporate legal intern for a major franchising company, advising on trademark portfolio strategy and franchise documentation.

Seth earned his law degree from the University of Denver Sturm College of Law, where he served as Online Editor for the Denver Sports and Entertainment Law Journal. Seth is a member of the Colorado IP Inn of Court, the National LGBTQ Bar Association, and the International Trademark Association. He holds a bachelor’s degree in political science, magna cum laude, from the University of Kentucky, where he remains a proud Wildcat fan.

Dr. Winborn focuses his practice on helping innovators within the biotechnology, life science, and medical device fields craft comprehensive protection strategies for their technologies. He partners with clients through all stages of the patent development process from due diligence and freedom-to-operate intelligence to prosecution and post-grant proceedings. Dr. Winborn’s practice focuses on molecular and cellular biology including the areas of biochemistry, microbiology, nutraceuticals, therapeutic methods, and genetic engineering.

Dr. Winborn previously worked as a research assistant and legal extern with the University of Iowa where he drafted provisional patent applications, office action responses, prior art searches, and claim charts. Dr. Winborn holds a bachelor of science degree from the University of Miami, as well as a doctoral degree and a law degree from the University of Iowa. While in law school, he received the Innovation, Business, and Law Excellence Award from the College of Law.

Before pursuing a legal career, Dr. Winborn served as a postdoctoral research fellow at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital where he developed an innovative proteomics-based approach to network biology to successfully predict new disease genes. His work resulted in the identification of a new causative gene for ALS. He also regularly collaborated with scientists on a range of research and development projects involving disease genetics and biology. His technical experience includes work on proteomics, genomics, transcriptomics, bioinformatics, genetics, antibody development, RNA interference, and protein and nucleic acid technologies.
