US Patent & Trademark Office Updates Trademark Filing Fees for 2025

The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) recently announced a new set of trademark fees that will take effect January 18, 2025. As part of our work to keep you informed, we created a condensed version of the new fee chart that highlights these changes.

It is important to note that the USPTO has made some changes that will require clients who are filing directly in the US and want to avoid paying higher fees to have more information about goods and services when they file their initial application. Of note, the USPTO is discontinuing the TEAS Plus application with a TEAS Standard application only. The TEAS Standard application base fee will remain $350 per class, but there will now be a surcharge of $100 per Class for all applications that do not provide all additional statements upfront, i.e., prior registration information, color claims, translations and transliterations, etc.

This new structure also imposes a surcharge of $200 for using the free-form text to enter identification of goods/services descriptions rather than using the descriptions set forth in the USPTO Trademark ID Manual. There will be an additional surcharge for each additional group of 1,000 characters beyond the first 1,000 of $200 per Class.  Ultimately, clients filing directly in the US will need to more efficiently identify goods/services to avoid higher fees.
