Dr. Rita (“Ruta”) Sanzgiri is a registered patent attorney who counsels her clients on patent strategies in the general areas of life-sciences, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, biochemistry, and green technology, “My bachelor’s in chemistry, my master’s in biotech and my Ph.D. in genetics have given me a broad base to understand the science and technologies I work with each day.”

Ruta’s practice includes all aspects of patent portfolio development and management, including domestic and foreign patent preparation and prosecution, ex parte reexamination proceedings, as well as patentability, freedom to operate, patent invalidity and non-infringement opinions. Ruta provides patent portfolio assessments and conducts due diligence reviews in corporate transactions. Her practice also includes patent litigation support and assistance with Hatch-Waxman Paragraph IV certification strategies. She has patent expertise in the fields of genetics, biochemistry, immunology, neuroscience, cancer therapeutics, vaccines, drug development, and nutritional products. Her clients range from early-stage biotech start-ups to established publicly funded companies, as well as nonprofit research institutes and universities. “What I love most about my job is delivering value to my clients in a meaningful way, understanding not only their inventions but their business, commercialization strategies, and competitors; so we can identify a good claim base that is going to be the most beneficial down the road,” she says.

Before her legal career, Ruta worked as a research associate in the biochemistry division of Bhabha Atomic Research Center (BARC), in Mumbai, India. Later, she obtained her Ph.D. in genetics from Iowa State University, where she studied cellular signaling in the mammalian nervous system in the laboratory of Dr. Phil Haydon. She further conducted post-doctoral research in neuroscience with Dr. Irwin Levitan and Dr. Leslie Griffith at Brandeis University. “My previous involvement with the discovery, research and how inventors think coupled with my  training as a lawyer, has prepared me to appreciate both, the legal and the non-legal, aspects of bringing inventions to market.”
