Matt counsels clients on all aspects of domestic and international trademark portfolio development and management. Matt’s practice includes partnering with clients early on in their brand creation process to help in the selection, clearance, use, and prosecution of trademarks. In this role, he excels at helping clients identify ways to optimize the value of their brands, including through the strategic acquisition of marks. Matt also has experience handling enforcement of marks, including oppositions with the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board as well as online and domain name enforcement.
In addition to his trademark prosecution and enforcement practice, Matt regularly helps clients negotiate and draft licensing and other intellectual property agreements, including software, SaaS, and other technology agreements. He also assists clients with compliance audits, which often necessitate the creation of privacy policies and terms of service for use in their platforms.
Before joining Sheridan Ross, Matt worked with a boutique intellectual property law firm, where he handled a breadth of trademark portfolios along with federal litigation preparation. Matt is a former judicial intern of Colorado Supreme Court Justice Brian Boatright and First Judicial District of Colorado Judge Diego Hunt. Before pursuing the law, Matt worked with a commercial advertising agency, where he gained a depth of experience helping clients manage and optimize their online presences. Matt earned his undergraduate degree in Journalism and Mass Communication from the University of Colorado and his law degree from the University of Denver Strum College of Law, where he served as staff editor for both the Sports and Entertainment Law Journal and the Transportation Law Journal.
