Scott is a natural problem solver and to him “patent law is a bit of a chess game.” Scott’s practice focuses on patent applications and the prosecution of computer hardware and software, electronics, and business methods, particularly within new and emerging technologies like robotics and electronic vehicles.

As a registered patent attorney with two decades of experience in intellectual property, Scott has successfully prepared and prosecuted hundreds of patent applications with various high-tech enterprises, startups, individual inventors, and his own inventions.  Scott’s clients benefit from his technical knowledge, business background, and entrepreneurial spirit. He is adept at partnering with clients throughout the invention process to identify unique and novel subject matter and then craft appropriate and patentable claims. His clients rely on his ability to deeply investigate and uncover patentable subject matter as well as his skill at developing and executing an overall IP strategy that fits their business objectives as well as their budgets.

Before joining Sheridan Ross, Scott was an in-house patent attorney at a multinational electronic component and device manufacturer. He was responsible for managing a portfolio with thousands of domestic and foreign patents, training in-house patent professionals, overseeing outside patent counsel, due diligence analysis, supporting litigation activities, and developing patent processes. Scott created and oversaw operations governing the entire patent lifecycle – from innovation through post-allowance and maintenance fee review.

Before his career in law, Scott served as a software engineer where he designed and built software applications for a diverse range of applications As a project manager, he oversaw software-hardware integration projects while earning an MBA. Patent law was a natural extension of his interests. “What I love most about patent law is that it’s the perfect blend of technology, law, and business,” he says.
